I am most interested in isolating the figure in a space where they have more relation with the viewer than with their own environment. Sometimes the figures perform their own tasks for you, and sometimes the figures look straight at you as if to start a direct conversation. While I primarily paint nudes, I’m continuously working on a series of portrait projects based on representing the youth of countries finding renewal after a time of political upheaval such as war or occupation. These portrait projects are being done in Estonia and Serbia, and I will be continuing the project in further countries. The series is rooted in painting, but involve recorded audio interviews, and installation. The series are dialogues in social rejuvenation. Jane Lafarge Hamill lives and works in New York City.
